Shepherd Book to get his own...well...his own book

If you loved Firefly and Serenity, then there's a good chance that like everyone else who loves it, you're annoyed that we never got the answers to any of the questions we had about Shepherd Book.  What was his past?  Who was he really?  What were his connections with the government?  How did he know so much about the military, guns, and the agents they would send after Mal?  How did his ID card grant him access to Alliance medical care?

Fans were hoping that after the show was cancelled, these questions would finally be answered in the movie Serenity.  But Joss Whedon gave us none of that, until now.

"The Shepherd's Tale" is a three issue mini series from Dark Horse Comics that will be coming out early next year.  In it, we will finally learn the truth about who Book is.

“I’ve already outlined the whole thing,” Whedon said. “We’re going to explain the entire history of Book, and what all that was about, which will be fun, because those are those most asked questions about the whole series.”

The three-issue, single volume series will be scripted by Jim Krueger, who wrote the current webcomic "The Other Half". While it won’t encompass Book’s whole life — “it’s not going to be ‘War and Peace,” Whedon said — it will comprise vignettes that will explain who he was and how he came to be there in the first place. “It’s all the good stuff,” Whedon promised. “And if you think I’m going to tell you, you’re incorrect. Because you have to read it.”

Well it's about gorram time!  The only detail revealed thus far is that what was believed to be Book's first name, Derrial, isn't actually his name at all.  It was a name he took from someone he killed.  Other than that, we're going to have to wait to learn the rest of Book's secrets.

Which is fine by me.  We've waited this long, we can wait a little more.  It is just nice knowing answers are on the way.
