Garfield minus Garfield is getting a book

If you've never visited the wonderful website garfieldminusgarfield.net, you really are missing out on something interesting.  The site is dedicated to a very simple premise; how would the Garfield comic strips look if you were to remove Garfield and the other animal characters from the strip.  No Garfield, no Odie, etc.

What happens is that the strips become a strange, yet fascinating study of Jon Arbuckle.  Seeing him alone in the panels, you realize that all this time he really has been talking to himself, as obviously Garfield isn't actually responding to him.  Seen in this light, Jon's life comes across as extraordinarily lonely.  He borders the line of lonely and sort of crazy, with his musings wandering from the existential to the bizarre.

Anyways, Garfield creator Jim Davis has granted the website the ability to print a book of the altered strips.  It is being published by Ballantine Books, the same publisher of the regular Garfield comics.  This is something I may very well pick up when it comes out.

Cheers to Jim Davis for being so awesome and letting something like this be made.
