This morning finds us with a bunch of Watchmen movie news to report. First up is the above video, which is a rather insightful look at the work that went into making The Minutemen as accurate as possible to the graphic novel. It really is impressive how much work was put into the costumes for the original crime fighting group of heroes in the Watchmen universe. It all looks so cheesy and retro and awesome. I love it.
Next up is a new viral marketing website for the movie that has gone up. TheNewFrontiersman.net doesn't have much of anything on it just yet, but word has it that the seal on the evidence package is going to come off soon and the site will have tons of pictures and videos and other things from the upcoming film.
Finally, there's still the ongoing fight over whether Warner Bros can even put the film out in the first place. I haven't updated you on the case lately, but here's where things stand now. After the Christmas Eve news that the Judge on the case was going to award the release rights to the film to Fox Pictures, the WB declined to make a deal with Fox thus forcing the whole thing to go to trial on January 20th as originally planned. Since then, both Fox and WB have agreed to let the judge make a ruling on the 20th over whether an injunction should be placed on the film's release date, possibly delaying the film's release until god knows when.
But Warners is asking that the hearing be moved up to as early as Monday because "time is critical," the studio argues in papers filed this week. "Watchmen" is scheduled for a March 6 bow, and Warners must soon commit to tens of millions of dollars in marketing for a film it isn't sure it can release.
The injunction fight stems from Feess' Christmas Eve preliminary ruling that Fox has a right to distribute the Zack Snyder adaptation of the popular graphic novel. Feess found that producer Lawrence Gordon failed to acquire Fox's entire interest in "Watchmen," thereby leaving Fox with rights under a 1994 turnaround agreement.
The studios are now battling over the key issue of whether that decision allows Fox to stop the film's release or whether the parties should proceed to a trial over money damages.
Right now, the fate of the movie is still up in the air. I'm starting to think that the chances are pretty thin that the film will actually be released on the currently set date of March 6th, but we'll have to wait and see if I'm right or not.
