The Ghostbusters Game Just Got Infinitely Cooler

ghostbusters

I've reported here before about how awesome the upcoming Ghostbusters video game looks.  It's written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (the creators of the Ghostbusters) and it features all of the original cast as the voice actors in the game, including Bill Murray.  The screenshots have looked pretty, the game's trailer looks great.  Hell, there's even rumors that Wii owners will be able to plug their DS into the game and use it as a PKE meter.

Everything about this game has sounded amazing.  But there has been one big question everyone has been asking.  One all important bit of information that has been withheld thus far.

Will the game be multiplayer?

The real question behind that is, "Can I go ghostbusting with my friends".  As awesome as this game looks, the Ghostbusters are a team and ghostbusting is a team activity.  To make a Ghostbusters game that is solo player only would be sort of lame.  Sure, playing the game solo would be fun and all, but nowhere near as fun as if you could play with your friends and coordinate tactics with them as you try to flank a rampaging spirit and catch it in your trap.

Well, official word has come down, and I have both good news and bad news.  First the good news.  Atari has finally spoken and the Ghostbusters game is definitely going to have a major multiplayer component.

Teamwork is what being a Ghostbuster is all about so Terminal Reality have worked with Three Wave Software, a triple-A multiplayer developer, to create an exciting and original multiplayer component in Ghostbusters: The Video Game for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

Offering gamers the unique opportunity to play as one of the four original Ghostbusters, an option not available in the single player game, the multiplayer is a fast-paced, co-operative experience. Taking place on an average phantom-packed day for the Ghostbusters team, players will work together to contain supernatural phenomena around the city while competing to earn the biggest pay check.

There are going to be six different multiplayer game types available on four different maps that will allow gamers to get together and go busting some ghosts as a group, which is really rad and all, but if you were paying attention during that quote you already know the bad news.

There's no multiplayer during the campaign mode.  Having gotten accustomed to games like Halo 3 or even this week's release of Resident Evil 5 where you can go through the campaign mode with your friends, I'm slightly sad to hear that you won't be able to do the same with the Ghostbusters game.  I was really hoping to be able to team up with my friends to go through the story together and maybe even face off against the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

I shouldn't complain though.  Overall the game does look really cool, and I am stoked that they included a multiplayer component at all.  It's just a small disappointment about the lack of multiplayer campaign mode.  Oh well, nothing is ever exactly how you want it to be, right?
