New Geek DVD Day - 07/14/09

The Color of Magic

The GoodThe Color of Magic

Why It's Good:  This mini series is based on the great and hilarious Terry Pratchett book by the same name.  It's the first in his beloved Discworld series, and is a great mix of fantasy, adventure and comedy.  I can't say that I've seen this adaptation of the book yet, but I've heard some positive things about it.  Plus, it has Sean Astin in it.  Anything with Mikey from the Goonies in it instantly qualifies as cool in my book.

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1

The BadassGI Joe - A Real American Hero: Season 1.1

Why It's Badass:  What with the new (and destined to be crappy) live-action GI Joe movie coming out soon, it's about that time that we all go back and revisit my personal favorite childhood TV show, even if only to remember the good times before we go into the theater and cry for 90 minutes straight as we're subjected to something akin to torture, only much more psychologically painful.

For die hard Joe fans though, you many want to hold off.  There's a super duper awesome monster collection of the entire GI Joe series coming out soon and you'll probably want to save your money for that.

The State: The Complete Series

The AwesomeThe State - The Complete Series

Why It's Awesome:  If you've never heard of The State before, I feel so sorry for you.  They just so happen to be the single funniest sketch comedy troupe of all time.  You know SNL? Amateurs by comparison.

The State was a sketch comedy show that ran on MTV back in the early 90's (when they mostly still played videos).  It only ran for four seasons, but they were four of the funniest seasons of TV you'll ever see.  The cast was comprised of amazing people such as Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Grant, Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, David Wain, Kerri Kenney, Jo Lo Truglio, Michael Patrick Jann and Kevin Allison.  You haven't heard of those names?  Well, maybe you should go watch some other shows like Reno 911 or Viva Variety or Stella or Ed or any number of other great shows in which the cast members have taken part in.

This DVD set is the first thing I will gladly apply the Geek-tastic seal of approval to.  Buy this and you're guaranteed to find yourself quoting it for years and years to come.  If you don't like it, then you must not have a sense of humor, and you should mail me your copy of the show so I can find a more deserving home for it.

  1. I'm reviewing The State right now (just started season 4) and loving every second of it!
