Holy Crap! The Silverhawks Are On DVD!

Ok, I officially take back my selection of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as this week's choice as The Awesome for New Geek DVD Day.  I thought nothing cooler than Indiana Jones had come out this week on DVD, I was sorely mistaken.

 

Silverhawks: Volume 1 has been released on DVD.  Fuck Yeah!!!

 

Don't know who the Silverhawks are?  Shame on you!  Go to Wikipedia immediately and learn yourself some proper knowledge.  Do you remember a little show called Thundercats?  Well, Silverhawks was made by the same people who made Thundercats, only this show took place in space and was a million times cooler. 

 

Yes, Thundercats is more popular and more remembered, but only because the masses are stupid and don't know greatness when they see it (and also because the Thundercats toys were cooler).  The Silverhawks toys, unfortunately, were kind of sucky.

 

But the show had so much to love.  Just read this synopsis from Wikipedia:

 

Bionic policeman Commander Stargazer recruited the SilverHawks, heroes who are "partly metal, partly real," to fight the evil Mon*Star, an escaped alien mob boss who transforms into an enormous armor-plated creature with the aid of Limbo’s Moonstar. Joining Mon*Star in his villainy is an intergalactic mob: the snakelike Yessman, the blade-armed Buzz-Saw, the "bull"-headed Mumbo-Jumbo, weather controller Windhammer, shapeshifter Mo-Lec-U-Lar, robotic card shark Pokerface, weapons-heavy Hardware, and "the musical madness of" Melodia (uses a "keytar" that fires musical notes).

 

Quicksilver (formerly Jonathan Quick) leads the SilverHawks, with his metal bird companion TallyHawk at his side. Twins Emily and Will Hart became Steelheart and Steelwill, the Silverhawks’ technician and strongman respectively. Country-singing Col. Bluegrass played a sonic guitar and piloted the team’s ship, the Maraj (pronounced "mirage" on the series, but given that spelling on the Kenner toy). Rounding out the group is a youngster “from the planet of the mimes,” named Copper Kidd (usually called "Kidd" for short), a mathematical genius who spoke in whistles and computerized tones. At the end of every episode, Copper Kidd was quizzed (along with the home audience) on various space facts.

 

There's so much awesome in there, I don't even know where to begin.  Bionic policemen, an alien mob boss, intergalactic mobs, keytars as weapons that shoot music notes.  Wow, this show had it all.  But the best part, In case you missed it, was that the man who flew the Silverhawks' spaceship was a country-singer who played the "sonic guitar", and his name...was Bluegrass. 

 

I'm sorry, but you DO NOT get more awesome than a space pilot/country singer named Bluegrass who plays the sonic guitar as his weapon. (you know, some people call him Space Cowboy, some call him the gangster of love). 

 

Oh, and Bluegrass was voiced by the same guy who was the voice of Lion-O from the Thundercats.

Seriously, this show fucking rocked.  If you're at all a fan of shows like He-Man, Thundercats, Voltron or GI Joe, you really need to give this show a try.  It was a great 80's kids show.
