In the meantime, here's the new geek DVD releases for this week.
The Good: Stargate - The Ark of Truth/Continuum
Why It's Good: I'll be honest here. I've never really cared too much for Stargate. I tried watching it a couple of times, but it just never excited me in the way shows like Firefly or BSG have. I don't know what it is, but it just never hooked me in. That's not to say that I think it's a bad show, I just never got into it. I do recognize though that there are vast numbers of incredibly loyal Stargate fans out there, and so to them I point out that this DVD came out today. It's the ending of the SG-1 series, and from what I've heard from fans of Stargate, it's pretty damn good.
The Badass: Wonder Woman
Why It's Badass: I caught the first half of this over the weekend at Wonder Con in San Francisco, and it's pretty fun. It's an animated movie of Wonder Woman's origin as she leaves her homeland for the first time to visit the world of man. It's also got Nathan Fillion in it, and he's always fun to watch (or listen to in this case). If you've liked the other DC Comics direct to DVD releases like Justice League: New Frontier or Superman: Doomsday, then chances are you'll like this one too.
The Awesome: Watchmen - The Complete Motion Comic
Why It's Awesome: While this is admittedly a blatant attempt to cash in on the Watchmen ferver that is most certainly going to be taking place this weekend, the idea of an animated comic book version of the Watchmen is incredibly intriguing. Note that this isn't a fully animated movie. It's a slightly animated version of still photos from the Watchmen comic with voices and sound effects added. Think of it like an animatic. Here's Amazon's product description:
Watched any great books lately? Now you can. The most celebrated graphic novel of all time that broke the conventional mold continues to break new ground. WATCHMEN illustrator Dave Gibbons oversees this digital version of the graphic novel that adds limited motion, voice and sound to the book's strikingly drawn panels. All 12 chapters of the story are here, nearly 5 hours spanning everything from the mysterious demise of the Comedian to the crisscrossed destinies of loosely allied superheroes to their fateful impact on the world. Be in the know. Be watching. With Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic.
For those Watchmen purists out there who have already decided to hate the film without ever seeing it, this at least is something that may possibly appease you. Over 5 hours of partially animated Watchmen goodness. It's sort of like an audio book version of the comic. You just aren't going to find a more faithful adaptation of the comic anywhere. And if this still doesn't please you...well...then...nothing ever will.
