It's Confirmed. Deadpool Is Getting His Own Film

Ever since it was originally announced that the character of Deadpool would be appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, speculation has been running rampant as to whether the uber-popular Marvel Comics mercenary would possibly get his own spinoff film to star in.  Well, the speculation has ended now as Variety is reporting that Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) will indeed be getting his own starring role in a feature film that's all about him.

Twentieth Century Fox has begun development on "Deadpool," an "X-Men" spinoff that will be crafted as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

The character is one of the most popular in Marvel Comics' X-Men universe. Deadpool is Wade Wilson, a mercenary who, dying of cancer, submits himself to the Weapon X genetic alteration experiment and emerges as an indestructible semi-sane anti-hero. Reynolds seemed destined to play the character. In one reference in the Marvel Comics, Deadpool is described as a mix between "a Shar Pei and Ryan Reynolds."

While I am certainly happy that one of my favorite Marvel characters is going to be getting his own film, I can't help but be worried about it after seeing what Fox Pictures did to him in the Wolverine film.  They competely bastardized his character and rather effectively ruined him to the point where he wasn't even recognizable by the end of the film as the same character fans know and love.

The inclusion of Ryan Reynolds to star as the merc with a mouth gives me some hope though.  Having Reynolds playing deadpool at the beginning of the Wolverine film was awesome.  He had the perfect amount of humor and annoyingness for the character.  Perhaps since this is being developed for him as a starring vechicle, this new film may possibly take place before the events of the Wolverine film.  That way, Reynolds will get to play Wade Wilson for the entire film, and we won't have to sit and watch a complete mutation of the character walking across the screen with swords that come out of his arms and laser beams that come out of his eyes.

Somehow I doubt we'll get so lucky, but one can always hope.  Right?
