A Beginner's Guide To Star Trek

trek

As we all know, the brand new Star Trek film comes out today.  For my fellow fans of the series, it's been a long seven year wait since the last time we got to experience the voyages of an Enterprise crew on the big screen.  For non-fans though, and even for an entire new generation that has grown up without a regular Star Trek TV series on the air, this may just be one in the long line of standard summer action films.

For a goodly number of those people though, this new film will hopefully be an amazing introduction into a whole new world.  One that they'll hopefully wish to explore more.  But for a new fan of the series, learning about Star Trek can be incredibly daunting.  The franchise has been around for more than 40 years now.  It has spanned five live-action TV shows, one animated series, eleven full length films and countless comic books and novels.  There are literally hundreds and hundreds of hours of television for someone who is interested in getting into Trek to watch.  Where to start can be confusing.

We here at Geek-tastic had broached this issue before with our very own Beginner's Guide To Star Trek, in which we gave you the a "best of" selection of episodes from the original series of the show.  However, we know that this was just a very basic beginning move.  For one who wishes to fully delve into the Star Trek universe, far more information will be needed.

In this respect, the amazing people over at IO9 have put together an incredible collection of information to help those who wish to seek out new life and new civilizations .  They're calling it The Online Guide To All Things Trek, and the name is as accurate as you can get.  It's a comprehensive list of links to everything a new Trek fan could possibly want to learn about.  It has all sorts of links that cover items such as:

  • Detailed information about the Star Trek Universe (think Star Trek Wikipedia)

  • Episode guides and reviews to every Star Trek show ever.

  • Technical specs and schematics of every starship that has ever appeared in Star Trek.

  • Guides to all of the Star Trek toys and collectibles that have ever been released.

  • Details on where to get your own Star Trek costumes, including how to make yourself into a Klingon.

  • Fan communities and groups you can join as well as where Star Trek conventions are.

  • Star Trek fan fiction (read at your own risk).

It's a very impressive list of information for both new fans of the series as well as older fans who would like to find some specific information.  Nowhere else on the net have I ever seen such a convenient list of Star Trek links all on one page.  It's the best place I can think of for new fans of Star Trek to begin their search for more information about the franchise.  IO9 really outdid itself this time around, and we should all be extremely thankful to them.
