New Geek DVD Day - 02/10/09

Street Fighter Extreme Edition [Blu-ray]

The GoodStreet Fighter - Extreme Edition on Blu-ray

Why It's Good:  Yes, this film is god awful horrible.  I freely admit that.  But it's also so bad it goes past the point of just being bad and becomes something else entirely.  It becomes one of the greatest comedy/action films of all time.  Yes, the comedy is unintentional, but that doesn't stop it from being comedic gold.  Jean Claude Van Dam plays Guile as he fights against the amazing actor Raul Julia (sadly, in his final role) as the evil M. Bison.

When it comes to video game movies, this is almost as bad as you can get.  Almost.  The Super Mario Brothers movie is about a million times worse.  But when it comes to really bad action films that have a cheesyness one can't help but at least find amusing, Street Fighter is pretty high up there.  Plus, now it's on Blu-ray, so you get to see the low production values in even more vivid ways than ever before.  This film is best watched with friends, preferrably while drinking heavily.  It's guaranteed to be amusing though to anyone who spent anywhere near as much money on this game as I did back when it was in arcades.

Batman (Two-Disc Special Edition)Batman Returns (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The BadassBatman & Batman Returns - Two Disc Special Editions

Why It's Badass:  Warner Brothers has finally gotten off of their lazy asses and put out some DVD's of Batman that actually have some special features on them.  Complete with commentary by Tim Burton and making of features and documentaries, these films are must haves for any Batman fan.  Without these films, Christopher Nolan's Bat-films, and pretty much all of the comic book movies we enjoy today, would never have gotten made.

And yes, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were also released today with two-disc special editions of their own but I refuse to acknowledge their existence and will not link directly to them on this site.  This is a personal moral decision of mine, and I hope you don't hold it against me.  The emotional scars those films created on a young Patrick run deep and it is best never to bring them up in my company.   If you wish to buy the films (dear god why?) you can find them yourself on Amazon.

My Name Is Bruce

The AwesomeMy Name Is Bruce

Why It's Awesome:  It's Bruce Campbell, playing himself, in a film where he has to fight an ancient Chinese demon.  It's also directed by Bruce Campbell.  I honestly don't know what else I need to say to explain the awesomeness of this movie.  Just look at the cover for it.  It has Bruce Campbell in a bad hawaiian shirt with a big ass gun.  What more could one ever possibly want from a film?  That there is 100% pure awesome.

If you really need more reason to go watch this film, just see this trailer.  If, after watching that you still don't want to see this film, I would argue that you have no soul and are doomed to a life of misery and sadness.  I pity you.
