New Geek DVD Day - 01/06/09
The Good: Babylon A.D.
Why It's Good: Ok, I know what you're thinking. You're saying to yourself right now, "A Vin Diesel movie? Really?" but hear me out. Yes, usually Vin Diesel films suck mad donkey balls, but it's a sci-fi film action film and I have a soft spot for cheesy sci-fi action films. Plus, there was a bunch of behind-the-scenes drama between the director and the film studio where the director dissed his own film saying that the studio forced him to change things and make it more appealable to a mass audience. If anything, it's worth a gander just for that.
There has been some word about a director's cut coming out, so you may want to wait for that as it may be better, but it's a slow geeky DVD week, and if you're needing a good sci-fi fix, this could hold you over. And while I know most people have a natural aversion to Vin Diesel, I feel it is my duty to remind everyone that his other film Pitch Black was actually a pretty good sci-fi horror film. So the guy's not all bad.
The Badass: Duckman - Season 4
Why It's Badass: If you've never watched Duckman before, you're in for a real treat. Running from 1994 to 1997 on USA, Duckman stars Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) as the voice of Eric Duckman, a private detective who lives in LA with his his family. The show follows Duckman and his pig partner Willibald Cornfed as they take on different cases each episode and solve mysteries. The show is filled with crude humor, vulgar animated jokes and all sorts of other great dirty things a cable animated show should have.
The writing was really good on the show though, and there were frequent celebrity guest appearances from people like David Duchovny, Ben Stiller, Coolio, Burt Reynolds, Gilbert Gottfried, Bobcat Goldthwait and many more.
The Awesome: Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.0
Why It's Awesome: Do I really even need to justify why this is awesome? It's Battlestar, 'nuff said (as Stan Lee would say). It's the first half of the final season of the show, things are all sorts of frakked up for the characters. Starbuck comes back from the dead, four of the final five Cylons have been revealed, lots of chaos takes place, people die, and then they finally get to Earth only to find that it doesn't solve any of their problems.
If you haven't been watching Battlestar Galactica, go back and catch up. There is very good reason why this show is referred to as the "Greatest Show on Television". And for those of you who do watch the show, don't worry...January 16th isn't too far off. We'll have new episodes soon.
