There's been a bunch of controversy brewing for a while now that the original ending of the The Watchmen comic wasn't going to be the ending we'll get to see in theaters. In the comic, the ending involves a giant squid that is used to kill millions of people in New York (it makes sense if you read the book, trust me). However, after some early test screenings of the film in Oregon rumors began to swirl across the internets that the giant squid wasn't in the movie and instead a different device is used.
Well, the film's director Zack Snyder recently sat down for an interview where he finally gives us a definitive take on whether or not the squid ending has been changed. And be forewarned die-hard comic fans who want to see a 100% loyal translation of the Watchmen comic to film, you aren't going to like the answer.
The squid was not in the movie when I got the script, the squid was never in any draft that I saw. My point is only that there was this elegant solution to the squid problem that I kind of embraced. I'm a fan of the thing as much as anyone, I was saying what are we going to do about this before I even read the script." Was that solution multiple atomic explosions as some have said? "I won't say exactly but... Dr. Manhattan has a certain energy signature, it's clearly his thing...so you know.
So there you have it people. No giant squid. It's going to be some sort of energy bomb thing that involves Dr. Manhattan's powers. Let the message boards everywhere now be filled with the vile hatred of fanboys eyerywhere.
Also revealed in the interview is that the runtime of the film will be 2 hours and 42 minutes including credits, and in the director's cut DVD which we all knew was coming, the film will run around three and a half hours after all of the Black Freighter stuff is put back into the movie (it's being released as a separate animated DVD before the movie comes out).
Oh, also, a new Watchmen Trailer will be shown before the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace which hits theaters this weekend.

Um, I can't help but think that a giant squid would look pretty ridiculous. While they're at it, why not throw a giant Spider in there. Maybe even have the Nite Owl wrestle Polar Bears to get into his ship.
ReplyDeleteWow, so now were using Kevin Smith's ideas (ideas which as of late have been stale and pale in comparison to the films he made long long before he made statements decrying giant spiders and polar bears) to convey why we should or should not do something in an action movie (a genre he's yet to tackle). Is it just me or did I forget it was 2008 and that technology has come far enough to provide us with a realistic starfish-squid-monster.
ReplyDeleteYou know what's silly? Changing ANYTHING in a comic book which is widely agreed to be the best ever. Perfection. Any alteration to it's perfection would lead it slowly away from it.
You know the album Dark Side of the Moon is perfect, lets remove all the drums and replace them with digital drums. You'll hardly be able to tell and the kids today LOVE digital drumming thus appealing it to the MASSES! That's what's best right? Not the integrity of the perfection of the origional concept, it's more important to replace key elements of the story in an effort to appeal it to "I big lone splosions" demographic.
