A New Day, A New Enterprise

There she is folks, J.J. Abrams' version of the most famous Starfleet vessel in history.  The NCC-1701, the USS Enterprise.  This is the ship that will go on a 5 year mission (helmed by Captain James T. Kirk) to explore strange new worlds.  It will seek out new life and new civilizations, it will boldly go where no ship has gone before...and it will eventually get the shit kicked out of it by Khan Noonien Singh (aka Ricardo Montalban).  And then a little while later, Kirk will blow it up just so Christopher Lloyd and his Klingon crew don't capture it.

But that's all years away from the events of the new movie.  This enterprise is new and spiffy and state of the art.  It has yet to be surpassed by the Excelsior class vessels that Sulu will eventually go on to command.

Overall, I must say that I'm happy with the outer design of the new movie's Enterprise.  After seeing the images of the super shiny bridge set, I was a little worried that they'd radically redesign the Enterprise as well.  I am very happy to see that my worries were unfounded.  While the ship definitely does look new and sleek and modern, it is still the USS Enterprise.  The designers didn't stray too far from the original design of the ship and have come up with a beautiful modernization of the classic ship.  I look forward to seeing this ship kick some Romulan ass next year!

Oh, and rumor has it that a new Star Trek trailer will be screening before the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace this weekend.  So if you're dying to see some new Trek on the big screen, be sure to go see the new Bond film.
